Training of Consultants

Become an expert in private sector adaptation to climate change!

Many SMEs lack the necessary skills and capacity to analyse climate change and to find adequate answers by themselves. Consultants and professional organisations can help SMEs overcome this barrier. This section provides materials for a Training of Consultants (ToC) that helps professional consultants become experts in private sector adaptation to climate change.

The Training is structured along the following modules:

Module 0:
Background and workshop methodology

The ojectives of this module are to:

  • Introduce the 4-Step Climate Expert Approach
  • Provide an overview of the ToC and training methodology

Module 1:
BUILDING AWARENESS OF SMES ON CLIMATE CHANGE AND ITS IMPACTS

The objectives of this module are to:

  • review relevant background and concepts of climate change
  • learn about past and expected climate trends in the country where the training takes place
  • learn about past and projected impacts of climate change and its implications for businesses

Module 2a:
ASSESSING CLIMATE CHANGE RISKS

The objectives of this module are to:

  • gain an understanding of the concept of risk
  • learn about the different types of risk and their importance
  • comprehend the basics of an risk assessment and why it matters to businesses

Module 2b
IDENTIFYING CLIMATE CHANGE OPPORTUNITIES

The objectives of this module are to:

  • understand the opportunities SMEs can unleash in the wake of climate change
  • learn about the two types of business opportunities
  • briefly go through important criteria for identifying and prioritizing business opportunities

Module 3a
IDENTIFYING AND PRIORITISING ADAPTATION MEASURES

The objectives of this module are to:

  • learn about adaptation and measures strategies
  • get to know different types of positive side effects
  • review by which criteria adaptation measures are compared and prioritized

Module 3b
COST-BENEFIT ANALYSIS

The objectives of this module are to:

  • understand the concept behind cost-benefit analysis (CBA)
  • understand the specific approach to CBA as it is used in the Company Assessment
  • acknowledge the short-comings of CBA in the context of climate change adaptation assessments

Module 4
DEVELOPING AN ADAPTATION STRATEGY

The objectives of this module are to:

  • understand how strategies contribute to making adaptation efforts more effective
  • learn how to combine adaptation measures in a realistic and promising manner
  • Understand how communication about goals and activities can support the achievement and implementation of the strategy

Module 5
Methodological approaches

The objectives of the module are to:

  • Discusses the role of the consultant when working with SMEs
  • Exchange ideas about the practical application of the Climate Expert Approach
  • Identify potential hurdles for Full Company Assessments and how to overcome them

  • Consultants Manual: The Consultants Manual provides a detailed overview of the different steps for developing an adaptation strategy. It helps consultant conduct the company assessment with their clients. The Manual is related to the Indian context but can be helpful for consultants from other countries as well.

It helps trainers in developing a training that fits the needs of their participants and that reflects the local context.
