Step 4:

Implementing and monitoring an adaptation strategy

Case study: Elements of IndTex’ adaptation strategy

In several preceding steps the case company had identified, assessed and prioritized which risks and opportunities emerge from the challenge of increasingly frequent and severe heat waves for the company. IndTex had then identified and prioritized measures to tackle the risks and measures to seize the opportunities. The following step now consisted in planning implementation of these measures in a structured, strategic manner. For this purpose, three categories of measures were differentiated:

  • Short-term measures which would be implemented immediately
  • Medium-term measures which would be implemented in the next two to three years
  • Long-term measures which would be implemented in the next four to eight years

The strategic planning allowed IndTex to identify potential synergies with other activities and ways for integration, but also potential conflicts and implementation barriers. Furthermore, success indicators and monitoring activities were determined. This detailed planning rendered it much more likely that the company could implement the measures effectively.

As a result of this process IndTex decided to implement the following measures in the short-, medium- and long-term to respond to the higher frequency and intensity of heat waves.

Measures for immediate implementation

  • Increase the storage volume for input materials
  • Diversify suppliers / identify less vulnerable regions
  • Produce and market apparel designs and materials with high ventilation properties

Measures to be implemented in the medium term (require some more planning and financing)

  • Insulation of the administrative building and facade
  • Roof greening
  • Installation of solar panels

Measures to be implemented in the long term (require a long-term view and planning process and need to be integrated into the strategic decision-making of the company)

  • Construction of a climate-proof plant in a less affected area
  • Build-up of an apparel line with cooling fabrics
